Sarawak governor's son Mahmud Abu Bekir Taib today escaped contempt of court proceedings brought by his former wife Shahnaz A Majid.
Syariah High Court judge Azzeman Omar delivered his verdict after hearing Bekir's explanation.
This follows the court's order for Bekir to pay more than RM900,000 as interim child maintenance for the couple's only son.
"The court accepts the justification of the respondent and the committal application (for contempt of court) is rejected," Justice Azzeman said.
The Syariah High Court had on Feb 26, 2013, issued an ex-parte order for Bekir to pay RM902,746.69 as child maintenance to pay for their son's education in the United Kingdom.
The order was part of the RM121 million claim by Shahnaz (right) for child maintenance.
Shahnaz also claimed mutaah (gift) of RM100 million and matrimonial property of RM300 million.
In his judgment this morning, Justice Azzeman agreed with Bekir's counsel that Bekir's application to quash the ex-parte order on March 23, 2013, needed to be heard before any charge of contempt could be preferred against him.
Child maintenance claim be put off to June 10
It was submitted that Bekir did not adhere to the ex-parte order to pay the interim child maintenance because he was had applied to quash the order.
Justice Azzeman also agreed with Shahnaz's counsel, who sought for the hearing on the RM121 million child maintenance claim be put off to June 10, 2014.
The application was made by Mohd Rafie Mohd Shafie and Akbardin Abdul Kader, who represented Shahnaz, as they needed time to review today's decision.
Shahnaz, who is sister of jazz singer Sheila Majid, married Bekir on Jan 9, 1992, and the marriage was registered at the Federal Territories Islamic Affairs Department.
They were divorced on May 11, 2011, and their son, Raden Murya, is now 21 years old.
