People at a market in Kepong Baru, Kuala Lumpur, tied up an alleged pickpocket and then slapped and shamed her in public on Friday.
The woman is allegedly Vietnamese, according to a report by citizen-journalism website Stomp.
A video of the incident shows the woman being scolded and then slapped by an older woman.
The public claimed that the woman caught was a serial pickpocket who had stolen in the town before.
A man then asked for a rope to tie up the woman, who was apparently restrained by a security guard.
Another man then parted the woman's hair unceremoniously to allow people to take photos of the woman's face.
In another video, shown on Stomp, the woman was seen wearing signs around her neck saying "pickpocket queen".
A woman in green then slapped the alleged pickpocket and continued to beat her while being egged on by other onlookers.
