Will our YBs die without the title?

YOURSAY 'Addressing those MPs as YB is more like an apple polishing act.'

Don't call us YB, says Padang Serai MP

Survivor: Yes, Mr N Surendran, we the rakyat can't agree with you more. You are absolutely right. In the UK they call Members of Parliament, "the right honourable member" while debating motions during parliamentary sessions, and call their fellow MPs by their name.

All our opposition MPs would be wise to do what the Padang Serai MP has said, and see what those in Umno Baru would do, or how they would respond to this initiative.

Anonymous_1398601876: Good precedent. Pakatan Rakyat elected representatives should start the ball rolling by spontaneously correcting anyone who addresses them with YB (Yang Berhormat, the honourable) to simply just call them by their normal designates.

Better still, they should encourage members of the public to address them by their last names, since elected representatives are always seeking public support so as to get re-elected into office.

Jstom: Well done, Encik Surendran! The word 'minister' itself means 'someone who ministers or serves someone else'.

Abcxyz: It is a good suggestion - even US president Barack Obama is referred to as Mr President.

Anonymous #67694451: I agree - addressing those MPs as YB looks like an apple polishing act. It is better to address them as 'saudara'.

Ramachandran Muniandy: When Harris Salleh was chief minister of Sabah during Berjaya era, he told the rakyat not address their state (Adun) or national representatives as YB because the rakyat are the masters not the other way around. In fact, they are paid with our tax monies.

Amochai: Popular actor Hamid Gurka was never an MP or Adun, but he is years ahead of MP Surendran in this matter. In one of his many dramas broadcasted on TV, Hamid portrayed himself as a wakil rakyat (people's representative) but told the rakyat not to refer to him as 'Yang Berhormat' but instead to call him 'Yang Berkhidmat' (one who serves).

BarathiTamil: You should accept whatever they call you. We are not interested in all this. Our nation is facing far bigger issues like Bank Rakyat allegedly approving a RM32 million loan without interest, or the goods and services tax (GST), inflation, petrol subsidy, corruption and racial issues.

I hope you can focus on solving these, rather than being busy with what people should call you.

Be Fair: Mr Surendran is actually planting the seed of self-dignity among the people by teaching us to look at another being as same as them, not higher or lower, because one can achieve whatever one wants if and only one values and respects oneself.

Surendran is trying to create good values in society

Pahatian: The Padang Serai MP has a point there. If they are really YB outside the Parliament, why is it that the police don't care a hoot whether they are YB or not? They still harass them, intimidate them, and play rough with the YB. Since they don't have any respect for the YB, why call them YB in the first place?

Anonymous 11: I am 100 percent in agreement with you Mr Surendran. We now honour even the most corrupt fellows as YB. Even though we know them as most dishonourable and people with no conscience or guilt. As from today, I will address the Adun or MP as Mr or Madam. Thanks for opening our minds.

Righteous: What "hormat" is there when they feed/feast their families shamelessly with illegal or non-halal money? Check this it out during the buka puasa sessions soon to come, in the five-star joints.

I can only afford to buka puasa with water and two biji kurma (dried dates). That is YB for Ramadhan. Wasalaam.

Armageddon: Surendran is right. Some YB start with beggar-like character, begging desperately for support, and when he/she has won, he/she automatically becomes an arrogant individual.

CiViC: Sadly the actual situation is not as Surendran makes it out to be. All these YB expect special treatment and priority in everything they do and wherever they go, and those who fail will be punished accordingly.

Sakit Hati Ku: Can you expect the ignorant and samseng to understand the finer points of the parliamentary system and make-up? The ketuanan Umno Melayu mentality is from the extraction of kampung mud heads. Once voted in, they demand respect when it is not there and misuse their titles that were inappropriately given.

As a matter of fact, many BN MPs are an insult to parliamentarians around the world.

This Umno mentality was inherited from the feudal system, the master and his serfs. MCA, MIC and Gerakan have happily joined the serfs, demonstrated by the display of Hulu Selangor representative P Kamalanathan's infamous hand kissing incident.

A good example of this 'master-serf' attitude is seen by the behaviour of that Umno Pasir Salak MP Tajuddin Abdul Rahman wearing a BN shirt and strolling inside a polling station during last Saturday’s Teluk Intan by-election. The police and Election Commission (EC) officers did nothing!

They didn't even have the guts to tell him off or throw him out of the restricted area. How shameless!

Sodom Me Sodom: The BN elected representatives will die every time a rakyat addresses them as encik or puan. Titles, money and power are everything to them. Surendran, I salute you and have great faith that the country will be far more secure in the hands of Pakatan Rakyat than in BN's clutches.

We will work with you for progress and change, sir. No need for titles, just the need to bring the nation up to be one of the best countries in the world. God knows many of her sons and daughters are capable.

Tan Kim Keong: It all boils down to the feudalistic mentality and psyche of people. These are self-imposed shackles. They don't know that they are created equal and that the elected representatives are to represent and serve them, and are not their 'lords'.

Nonbeliever: No one should be respected unless he is humble; says a Chinese sage. Religion equals humility. Humility equals religion. Humility is better than 10 PhDs. A person without humility is a corrupt person.

IQ900: In Malaysia, politicians, particularly BN MPs and Adun, want to be treated like God. It is high time the people treat them like our servants.

Appum: Why not change the term 'YB' to 'YIK': yang ikut perintah rakyat (one who follows the people's orders)?

Sleepy: At first I didn't want to comment because like other readers, I thought there were more pressing issues to deal with. But on second thoughts, I now know where the MP is going with this issue. To summarise, MPs are elected to serve the people, not to be served by the people.

Unfortunately, many forget this and need reminding. -Mkini
