An 86-year-old Hindu swami bathed in water mixed with more than 30kg of chilli powder to ward off the hardship and suffering of others, reported Malaysia Nanban.
When news of the ritual spread, a huge crowd gathered at the site in Sathuvachari, Chennai, on Sunday to watch.
During the ritual, some 100 people took turns to pour the mixture over the swami, who calls himself the "Alukku (Dirt) Samiyar", while he sat inside a 25-litre cooking vessel.
The ritual, which was arranged by a local realtor, lasted for about half an hour.
The swami, who is from Vadakara, Kerala, had performed a similar ritual in Kadapa, Andhra Pradesh, two years ago. -Asiaone
