The cross is a sacred symbol of the Christian community, says mentri besar.
SHAH ALAM: Forcing a church in Taman Medan to remove the cross is unacceptable and disrespectful to Christians, said Selangor Mentri Besar Azmin Ali today.
“The cross is a sacred symbol for the Christian community.
“To force them to remove the symbol is certainly unacceptable and disrespectful to the Christian community,” the Star Online quoted Azmin as telling reporters after attending the monthly meeting for state government departments today.
About 50 people had gathered outside a church in Taman Medan yesterday to protest against a cross on the church’s building.
They had demanded for the cross to be taken down, claiming that it challenged Islam.
Some protesters also said that the existence of a church in the vicinity was an affront to their faith.
It is understood that the cross was taken down by church authorities several hours later.
The church was conducting Sunday service when the protesters gathered outside.
