Caning must be done judiciously and only as a last resort without causing harm.
KOTA KINABALU: Caning in schools is still relevant to teach and discipline students, said National Union of the Teaching Profession president Hashim Adnan.
He said although many countries, particularly in the West, had abolished caning in schools, it was still relevant in Asian societies like Malaysia.
“But it must be done judiciously and as a last resort after counselling and other psychological methods fail. The caning must also not harm the recipient and it is advised caning is only done on the buttocks,” he told Bernama after appearing as a panellist on forum on caning in schools held at Universiti Malaysia Sabah here yesterday.
He added that disciplinary issues in schools if not addressed well could lead to much bigger problems.
