The banker included the caption, “Now appearing in Malaysian politics,” in what was an apparent jab at Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s speech at an anti-war forum yesterday.
Muhyiddin had said yesterday that Dr Mahathir was not alone in speaking the truth, even as the former prime minister continues to draw flak from Umno for criticising Najib and his administration.
“Telling the truth and standing up... This is your trademark since you were a young doctor and Umno member.
"You are not alone in telling the truth," said Muhyiddin in his speech at the forum entitled "Engaging the young to criminalise war and energise peace".
Dr Mahathir was also present at the forum and was seated beside the Umno deputy president.
Although Muhyiddin was referring to Dr Mahathir's stance on war, his statement also appeared to be a reference to the former prime minister's claim that he was alone in demanding answers from Najib.
In his blog, Dr Mahathir wrote, "I know I am alone. But I feel responsible to the people, is that wrong? When the people’s money goes missing and is hidden from them, is it wrong for me to ask?"
His post prompted two popular local celebrities, Datuk Siti Nurhaliza Taruddin and Rozita Che Wan, to openly pledge their support for the former prime minister.
Former Umno vice-president Tan Sri Muhammad Muhammad Taib also said that Dr Mahathir could always count on the silent majority for support.
Dr Mahathir has gone on a tirade against Najib in recent months, urging the prime minister to step down over the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal, for continuing the 1Malaysia People's Aid (BR1M), and also over his alleged ties to the murdered Mongolian woman, Altantuya Shaariibuu.
Today, Dr Mahathir also fired a new salvo at Najib, this time including mention of the prime minister's wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor and her "lavish lifestyle".
Taking Najib to task again over unexplained missing funds from debt-ridden 1MDB, Dr Mahathir said in a blog post today that he had been able to overlook some of Najib's "behaviour" until now.
"There are many things about his personal behaviour that I thought were not right. But I was prepared to overlook them, including he and his wife’s lavish lifestyle," the former prime minister wrote.
Najib gave a special interview on TV3 a fortnight ago to address the issues raised by Dr Mahathir, but the former prime minister said that there were many questions still left unanswered, including the whereabouts of 1MDB's Cayman Islands funds, which had reportedly been parked in Singapore.
