Johor Crown Prince Tengku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim has free speech rights and should not be curtailed from making comments, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said today in response to a cabinet minister's warning to the royal to stop commenting on politics.
Dr Mahathir was commenting on criticism by Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nazi Aziz who told Tengku Ismail to stay out of politics or risk getting "whacked" for implying that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had evaded responsibility by not showing up at the "Nothing to Hide" dialogue last week.
"He also has freedom of speech. Do we have a law saying that he doesn't have free speech?" the retired statesman said at a press confence after a forum at the Cooler Lumpur Festival today.
Meanwhile, Dr Mahathir also asked Nazri to read his blog following the minister's criticisms against him.
Nazri claimed that Dr Mahathir was an "ordinary citizen" and should not be asking for the resignation of Najib.
But Dr Mahathir said that while he was a an ordinary citizen, he is getting enough support from the people regarding his calls for Najib to leave his post.
"When I posted up the blog saying that I am doing this alone, in about an hour a million people visited the blog. So am I alone?" he said.
