According to PKR, the ADUNs who support the present Selangor State Government are in support of Azmin Ali, the Menteri Besar. Nothing that smacks of any kind of a formal coalition. So DAP and PAS can still govern together without talking to each other. Kind of silly, but as they say, stranger things have happened, especially in the name of political expediency.
According to Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, the old Pakatan Rakyat is formally dead. Now the parties are working together informally. Like she is formally Leader of Opposition, informally it’s Lim Kit Siang. Formally she has a Deputy President, informally she and Azmin Ali hate each other’s guts. Formally, Anwar Ibrahim can’t be boss, informally he is always the PKR supremo.
So let me get this straight. Formal is what you see, informal is the real thing. Or is it the way round? All I know is, it adds up to one word – Hipocrisy. DAP and PAS do not just don’t get along, they can’t stand each other, if we are to take what they say seriously. Okay, now I get it, we are NOT supposed to take what they say seriously. Is that it?
“The Selangor government is against toll highways. But don’t take us seriously. For that matter, the state budget is also not to be taken seriously. Please bear in mind to watch what we do informally. Those count.”
What bloody nonsense! We are being taken for a ride. We understand the importance of clinging on to power, or not jeopardizing what is in your hands. But we also know the overriding importance of principles of struggle. Principles that give character to a common want, that make people to want to endeavour and sacrifice for what they believe in.
Expediecies are what respectable-looking sell-outs are all about. Very polite words. Immediate gratification matters to those who use politics to advance themselves, and not to advance beliefs. And we dare laugh at poor people who attend rallies in exchange for a decent meal and some pocket money. What about bareaucrats who fall for grafification at the expense of their public duty. It’s the same thing, only a matter of degree.
The point is, if one is prone to it in whatever small way, it is how you start. Go ahead, DAP, do as you please with myriads of rationalisation to justify it. In the present context, DAP is saying it that it is okay to work with the people you hate, what matters is your common enemy’s hand are off the steering wheel.
So it follows that it is quite respectable and palatable for UMNO to support a government headed by Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim who will be also supported by PAS. This no unity government; they hate each other’s guts too. They just have this common support of Khalid. Stranger thing had happened in Azmin’s government.
A few things to sort out, a couple of frogs from here to there, from there to here, and voila! Money will change hands but so what? Does that break any principles? It is called political expediency too. All Malaysian political parties subscribe to it.
Just remember, graft does not just come in the form of ringgits in little brown envelopes. Salaries, positions, titles, properties, holiday trips, shares, approvals, licenses, sex, and invitations and memberships to exclusive functions and clubs are a few of the currencies.
And it is not just in the form you are made to believe. Compromise of principles in exchange of comfort is the mother of all graft. It is the institutionalised version of corruption at the expense of the trusting Rakyat. They didn’t teach me that in a Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commision course. It’s from the teachings of my religion and for sure, yours too. No wonder religion is not so popular nowadays.
DAP will undoubtedly prove me wrong and reject this hilarious charade offered by PKR who needs this swan song to make their hay while the sun shines. To PAS it’s a no-brainier because it seems to doesn’t know what it really wants. Putus tapi tak putus?
