Selangor police have launched an investigation against Tan Sri Rahim Thamby Chik over a Facebook posting alleging that the Selangor crown prince had converted to Christianity.
State police chief Datuk Abdul Samah Mat said that Shah Alam police headquarters will be in charge of the investigation classified under Section 500 of the Penal Code for defamation.
“A investigation paper has been opened under Section 500 of the Penal Code against Tan Sri Rahim Tamby Chik. It is ongoing,” Abdul Samah said in a text message to The Malaysian Insider.
Two days ago, Selangor Royal Council had pointed out that the former Malacca chief minister’s comment against the crown prince, Tengku Amir Shah was seditious in nature and has elements of slander which can cause hatred among the Muslims towards the crown prince and the Sultan of Selangor.
The council secretary Hanafisah Jais said Rahim’s comment was irresponsible.
According to The Star Online, Rahim had apologised three times over his posting in the last one week and admitted that the source of his claim was from unsubstantiated website.
Hanafisah said Rahim’s actions were done deliberately and with dishonest intention to question the faith of the crown prince as a Muslim.
Rahim’s comment, she said, had resulted in many responses and comments from the public especially among Muslims who showed that they were angry and upset with the crown prince and the Selangor Sultan.
The council expressed regrets that Rahim did not verify the authenticity of any postings made by external portals before making his views.
“It is very easy for him to conduct checks to ensure the authenticity of the news if he is really responsible.
“Moreover, the posting went viral last year and the Inspector-General of Police had denied it last year after a police report was lodged by the palace,” she said in a statement.
