Muslims all over the world celebrated their New Year. Indeed, like in other faiths, Muslims embrace the advent of their New Year in prayer and with pious humility. But when politicians use the occasion to preach, you wonder what happened to all the learned leaders of religion in Malaysia.
The question is why is the prime minister of Malaysia sowing deeper dissent on this sanctified day, Ma'al Hijrah? Should it not be at the least the Grand Imam of Masjid Negara who should be addressing the faithful in the holy ground of Masjid Negara?
Even if the DYMM Yang DiPertuan Agung addressed the faithful it would have been more meaningful - but a political party president and prime minister?
It is reported that the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak today pledged not to allow those who are in cahoots with local and foreign elements to destroy the country, following the arrest and charging of two individuals who had lodged reports in foreign countries over troubled 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
"Malaysia is peaceful, harmonious and our aim is to be a developed nation with Islam as its core.
"Do not allow this to be destroyed. Do not allow anyone to be in cahoots with internal and external parties to destroy what we have achieved so far," he said in his speech at the Ma'al Hijrah celebrations in Masjid Negara.
Twisting religion to keep his own position safe
PM Najib
Now Mr Honorable Prime Minister of Malaysia, who is lying and who is not? If only the opposition politicians threw stones at 1MDB many may still believe you. But when even when your own Umno party politicians are saying that there is more than meets the eyes about 1MDB, what do you expect the rest of the population to think?
And why must you use this auspicious, religious and sacrosanct celebration to speak politics? And of all places in Masjid Negara, the iconic place of worship that Muslims all across the Muslim and even non-Muslim world have come to know and respect.
You have full control over the mouth-piece media. You have an entire Cabinet at your beck and call. You have numerous prestigious platforms to speak about political conflicts and slam your critics.
But you chose to even desecrate the holy day of all Muslims by attacking those who are not in tandem with your doings.
It is reported too that you preached, "Do not allow this to be destroyed. Do not allow anyone to be in cahoots with internal and external parties to destroy what we have achieved so far".
In urging Muslims to ensure that harmony and peace, which the country has enjoyed so far to not be destroyed by irresponsible people you have also preached that it was the duty of all Muslims to defend existing leaders.
Islam is humble, Najib is arrogant
Wait a minute. Defend existing leaders is a duty true. But when there is half a nation – if not more, doubting these leaders, how can it be a duty to defend?
It would have been more meritorious if the prime minister had appealed that all Muslims have a duty to seek the truth and defend the virtuous leaders against lying, thieving leaders.
But instead you chose to go on and say, "The light of hope for the Islamic world is Malaysia. This is what we should defend with all our strength."
Would it not have been more meaningful for the King to make such an invitation on behalf of this nation?
And by the way, why so much haughtiness in claiming that Malaysia is the ‘light of hope for the Islamic world’? Why belittle the nations that have and will always be the cradle of Islam? And in any case let us be humble. One nation cannot be the light for the entire world. Only the Almighty has that power and grace and mercy to dictate so.
Well it is time that Muslims put a stop to politicians trying to hijack sacred and meaningful occasions that are pivotal toe the faithful. - MAILBAG
