Deputy home minister says Anwar Ibrahim receives physiotherapy, is allowed to perform Friday prayers and is granted visits by his family and lawyers.
KUALA LUMPUR: Former Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim has been receiving “special treatment by the government on humanitarian grounds” while serving a five-year prison sentence, says Deputy Home Minister Nur Jazlan Mohamed.
He also reiterated that this special treatment was not enjoyed by the other 50,000 prisoners in the country’s other prisons.
“I want to stress here, there are 50,000 prisoners nationwide, they are supposed to receive equal treatment (but do not).
“But in the case of Anwar, he is given the opportunity to conduct various activities like physiotherapy and Friday prayers.
“I want to emphasise, the government gives him special treatment and always adopts the humanitarian (approach) where he (Anwar) is concerned. Just accept the fact,” Nur Jazlan said in response to a question by Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah at the Dewan Rakyat here today.
Nurul had asked the Home Ministry why her father was not allowed to get his physiotherapy two to three times a week as he needed.
According to Nur Jazlan, who is also Pulai MP, Anwar had so far received 83 medical check ups and 10 physiotherapy sessions in the span of his 38 weeks in prison.
He further explained that Anwar had also been allowed to see his family a total of 15 times and meet his lawyers 65 times aside from being allowed to perform his Friday prayers for 35 weeks.
Meanwhile, Mersing MP Abdul Latiff Ahmad warned the government to beware of Anwar since the politician had once claimed of arsenic poisoning during his last sodomy trial.
“The (examination) results showed that he was not poisoned. So I want to ask, have we forgotten history? He has the elements of a compulsive liar,” Abd Latiff said.
This remark however brought on a protest by Nurul and and Latiff was forced to retract the allegation.
