Electoral reform group Bersih has denied any hanky-panky in its postcard campaign urging MPs to support a no-confidence vote against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.
"Bersih has been informed that some of the petitioners do not exist in the electoral roll or have filled in the wrong parliamentary constituency.
"Bersih stresses that there was nothing improper in the process of the online petition.
"It was conducted bona fide with the trust that those filing the petition knew who their elected representative were and in which parliamentary constituency they were voting in," it said in a statement today.
Bersih had in the last month through the DearYB.my platform collected petitions calling for MPs to support a no-confidence vote against the prime minister.
It had since dispatched some 20,000 postcards nationwide and printed out 11,000 more signed online petition forms and sent them to MPs.
Bersih said it regretted any shortcomings of the campaign, adding that some petitioners were not aware of who their MP was.
However, it said these shortcomings should not divert from the overall message of the petitioners to their MPs to reject Najib.
It added that the petition as a whole should not be dismissed on mere technicalities. -Mkini
