Following the revelation by Dr Chua Soi Lek that some of the RM2.6 billion that Prime Minister Najib Razak received as a political donation was used to fund BN component parties during GE13, perhaps all the MCA candidates should now step forward and reveal the amount of election funding they received.
That Najib financed BN candidates during GE13 is no longer in doubt. What can be considered suspicious is the quantum of election funds given to BN candidates for the election campaign. Under the election laws, there is a limit for election expenses.
None of the MCA candidates have publicly revealed how much they obtained from the PM as election fund. In fact, apart from Johore Bahru MP Shahrir Samad who acknowledged that he was given RM1 million, none of the Umno MPs were decent enough to tell the truth too.
Dr Chua Soi Lek, the former MCA president, claimed in an interview with Mandarin news portal Cari.com.my, that Najib had informed all BN component party leaders in a meeting held before GE13 that the latter promised to assist them financially.
“I must admit, during the BN supreme council meeting approaching the May 5general election, he (Najib) in his capacity as prime minister and BN chairperson, did reveal that in that election, BN will support its component parties’ finances.
“I remembered clearly, I was the first to thank him,” Chua was quoted as saying.
“When the election came, he delivered - he was able to disburse some funds (to the component parties),” he was quoted as saying.
Chua’s interview with Cari.com.my was later picked up by several news portals and newspapers.
Unfortunately, Chua did not reveal how much MCA was given during GE13. As MCA president then, he should know. But why keep it a secret, even after letting the whole world know that indeed all BN parties, including MCA, were financed by the PM.
Chua’s statement that he did not receive a single sen in five general elections was also interesting. But in GE13, the MCA must have been given a big sum but the then MCA president did not contest in the elections.
Indeed Chua would be doing the MCA a big favour by coming clean with the amount the party received from the PM for GE13.
As Chua himself said, there is nothing wrong with political donations, so why then be so secretive about it?
MCA candidates during GE13 should also be man enough to come clean on the political donation from the PM.
In fact, all the BN candidates should do so.
