DPM also says that racist banners at the Red Shirts rally did not belong to the organisers but were carried by other individuals.
KUALA LUMPUR: Former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad simply went to the wrong rally when he showed up at the Bersih 4 event in August, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said when countering a comment by an Opposition MP in Parliament today.
The deputy prime minister passed this sarcastic remark when Teresa Kok (DAP-Seputeh) defended the Bersih 4 rally as having no racist undertones although there was a huge turnout of those from the Chinese community.
On hearing this, Zahid, who is also Home Minister, shot back, telling Kok she had better be more realistic about what she said.
“Actually DAP was hoping that all races would join the rally but there was only one race.
“What was the percentage of non-Malays who joined the rally?
“Tun M was only one person and he wasn’t there to support (Bersih 4). He was there because he mistakenly joined the wrong group,” Zahid quipped.
Defending the Red-Shirts rally that followed on September 16, Zahid said that police had conducted investigations and discovered that the pictures of racially tinged banners that went viral on social media had not come from the organisers.
“There is not one banner that was racially tinged or touched on any other religion.
“What went viral on social media, we have investigated and there is not a single banner that was racially tinged, it was by other parties,” he added.
