Ali Rustam: Stop giving Kota Raya scuffle a racial tinge

National Silat Federation (Pesaka) president appeals to customers who claim to have been cheated to let the police bring the relevant errant traders to book.
ali-rustamKUALA LUMPUR: It is wrong to give a racial skew to the scuffle that took place at the Kota Raya shopping complex on Sunday over the issue of errant handphone traders who were suspected of having cheated several customers, said Mohd Ali Rustam today.
“This (scuffle) is not a racial issue. It is an etiquette issue. Malaysians like to make everything a racial issue, every little thing. I hope this doesn’t happen again.”
“Let the police handle it. I hope they investigate the incident and find out if it’s true that the vendors overcharge customers,” the National Silat Federation (Pesaka) president told a press conference at Parliament building.
In yesterday’s scuffle, a group of customers, who alleged they had been scammed by traders at the complex, showed up with sticks and helmets to vent their anger. When things got out of hand, security personnel on duty ordered the complete shut down on the complex.
On another matter, Ali said there were no plans to ban weapons from being used by silat performers during official ceremonies.
He said the fatal stabbing of a 17-year-old by a fellow performer recently, was a freak accident and as such Pesaka had “no plans to ban weapons from wedding performances or competitions.”
“It was a freak accident, a one in a million case. We just hope that silat performers are more careful in the future,” he said.
The incident at Kg Patau-Patau in Labuan last Saturday saw college student Mohd Amil Zulkarnain killed after being accidentally stabbed in the chest with a keris.
The deceased was performing martial art routines with his cousin, also 17, when he was stabbed.
