Kotaraya phone shops stay shut after Sunday melee

Most of the mobiles phone shop situated at Kotaraya shopping complex opposite Chinatown in Kuala Lumpur remained closed today following yesterday's altercation which saw a group storm one particular shop and attack its employees.
A visit to the mall today which is a popular mobile phone hub found that four phone shops were open out of the more than ten on the premises.
However, other outlets selling clothing and jewellery were open for business as usual.
During the incident at 5pm yesterday, some 20 men reportedly confronted workers at a mobile phone store in Kotaroya over allegations of being cheated.
The scuffle was eventually brought under control but not before two shop workers suffered minor injuries.
The Star Online today reported that police have arrested a 38-year-old man and still investigating whether the suspect was the one allegedly cheated by a trader at the complex.
Many of the shop assistants interviewed today said they were not clear on what caused the fight. Some workers refused to be interviewed outright.
A phone shop assiatnt who wanted to be known only as Wong, 34, said he was attending to customers in his shop when the fracas broke put.
"Yesterday, there was many customers here. When the brawl broken out, all the customers got scared and they rushed into the nearest shops.
"We decided to close our shop when we saw this. We don't know what happened,” said Wong.
However, Wong said yesterday's incident had not affected business at his outlet which was open today. "There is nothing to fear," said Wong confidently when interviewed while having his lunch.
Asked on the allegation that customer last week was confined by a phone shop's employees after he changed his mind about purchasing four mobile phones because the price had been jacked up, Wong questioned this.
He said this was doubtful as there were no places in the comples where a person could be locked up for a period of time.
Not authorised outlet
Meanwhile, although a blue-and-white 'Samsung Mobile' signboard could be seen over the phone store which was stormed yesterday, the Samsung Malaysia today clarified that the store was not recognised.
Samsung's careline agent customer service provider Fuluhatmin Firanukanur Allah Sulaiman told Malaysiakini that the store at Kotaraya was not a Samsung authorised dealer.
"We do not have any Samsung outlets or counters at the Kotaraaya shopping complex.
"The related store is not a Samsung authorised dealer [...] maybe it is a fake one. Samsung Malaysia does not have any relation with it," said Fuluhatmin.
Yesterday's incident comes five months after a similar scuffle at a mobile phone-shop at the city's main digital gadgets hub at Low Yat Plaza.
That incident escalated into a major brawl with youths going on a street rampage forcing riot control police to mobilise.
Following this, NGOs organised a rally in the city centre on Sept 16 which saw them confront riot control police at Chinatown, an area dominated by Chinese businesses. -Mkini
