As a responsible leader, Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak should admit the mistakes that he has made, rather than go on pretending that all is well, said his sacked deputy, Muhyiddin Yassin.
"The Umno president, is embroiled in a lot of scandals that have reached what I would say are global proportions, this is what every Malaysian is so concerned about.
"You are sitting in that chair, it's your responsibility to safeguard the interests of the nation," was Muhyiddin's message to Najib.
He said this after opening a blood drive campaign at a shopping mall in Kuala Lumpur today.
"If you are facing problems today, you must acknowledge the mistakes you made. They are not secrets. The whole nation, the whole world, knows about them," Muhyiddin said.
Vocal criticisms
Muhyiddin was sacked in a cabinet reshuffle in July last year, after his vocal criticisms against Najib's leadership in the face of the alleged embezzlement of 1MDB funds, and the 'donation' scandal that involved billions of ringgit channeled into the PM's personal account.
He has since gone on a campaign to question Najib over the various scandals, and has joined former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad to lead the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) as pro-tem president.
Bersatu is poised to unseat Umno in the Malay heartlands and take Najib down, in concert with the opposition.
However, critics wonder if the new party's decision to be Malay-based contradicts its reform agenda, and if this would act against it in today's inclusive politics.
Najib has denied culpability in the 1MDB scandal and claims that the money in his account was donated by a Saudi prince. The prime minister has also been cleared from any wrongdoing by attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali. - Mkini
