PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying have reached the final of the badminton mixed doubles event at the Rio Olympics, thus assuring them of at least a silver medal.
Chan and Goh defeated China’s Xu Chen and Ma Jin in straight sets, 21-12, 21-19, to become the first mixed doubles pair from Malaysia to win an Olympic medal.
The Malaysian pair, which took only 45 minutes to bring down their Chinese opponents, will next meet Liliyana Natsir and Tontowi Ahmad from Indonesia in the final which will be played tomorrow at 11.30pm, Malaysian time.
The win was also the second major achievement by the Malaysian badminton team in Rio on Monday night, after the top men’s doubles pair of Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong stunned the world number one pair of Lee Yong Dae and Yoon Yeon Seong from South Korea to qualify for the men’s doubles semifinals.
The Malaysians marched into the semis with a 17-21, 21-18, 21-19 win in 86 minutes. It was also only the second time Goh and Tan had beaten the Koreans, having lost the other six times they met.
They will next take on China’s Chai Biao  and Hong Wei in the semi-finals at 8pm tonight.
