KUALA LUMPUR: About 20 protesters from Jaringan Melayu Malaysia (JMM) gathered in front of the Jalan Duta Court Complex here to challenge former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin to a debate.
They want him to debate them on his alleged affair with a businesswoman. Muhyiddin has denied any such affair.
The group, led by JMM secretary-general Hamdan Mohd Salleh and controversial Umno figure Ali Tinju, gathered as early as 8am outside the gates of the court complex, where the divorce proceedings of former public prosecutor Stanley Clement Augustin and his estranged wife Nika Gee Siew Yee, was set to take place.
Former Umno deputy president Muhyiddin has been dragged into the case by a blogger.
In his divorce filing last year, Augustin had alleged that Gee was involved in an affair with a political figure – out of which, he claimed, she had gained financially and other material benefits.
Blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin later named Muhyiddin as the politician – an allegation the latter has vehemently denied, calling it slanderous and unfounded.
The group, clad in red t-shirts, sat in front of the gates of the court complex, blocking traffic, and preventing cars from going into the complex. They carried banners and called Muhyiddin a “liar”.
The group refused to disperse despite orders from court security personnel but adjourned their “protest” to the court corridor, where they were heard giving speeches, reiterating their earlier calls. Police personnel were later seen at the premises – watching the drama unfold.
