IGP: 'Plot against PM' case closed, report based on assumptions

Police will not investigate a report filed by Umno Youth vice-chief Khairul Azwan Harun alleging a high-level conspiracy against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar said the report was based on "andaian-andaian" or assumptions and therefore did not warrant further investigation.

"We recorded his statement (last Friday), and we found that he made the report based on assumptions. He could not provide any proof to substantiate his allegations.

"We cannot afford to go (proceed with an investigation) based on assumptions," he told reporters in Shah Alam.

However, Khalid said the Umno Youth leader would not be investigated for making a false report.

Responding to a question if this constituted a false report, the police chief replied: "No. He perhaps read news reports or heard stories. He has his reasons for making the report."

"We have already advised him not to do that again in future," he added.

In his report last week, the Umno Youth leader named former Bank Negara governor Zeti Akthar Aziz, former Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Abu Kassim Mohamed and ex-attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail.

He claimed the three were suspected of providing classified information to foreign agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), without authorisation.

Khairul also alleged that the three could have falsified the information to achieve their agenda.

Meanwhile, Khalid said the police would not record statements from the three high- ranking former officials named in the report."We don't want to waste our time calling people when there are no real good grounds to do so," he added.

He also reminded those who wanted to lodge reports not to make accusations in the absence of concrete evidence.

Abdul Gani had dismissed Khairul’s claim as a publicity stunt and engaged former Malaysian Bar president Ragunath Kesavan to act for him on this matter.

Zeti had said she would seek legal counsel whereas Abu Kassim told reporters that his lawyer had instructed him to remain silent on the allegation.- Mkini
