Political cartoonist Zulkiflee Anwar Ulhaque, better known as Zunar, has produced T-shirts with the words ‘Malaysian Official 1 (MO1)'.
He said the idea stemmed from the inability of cabinet ministers and enforcement agencies to identify the official mentioned in the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) court filings on the alleged abuse of 1MDB funds.
“(So) perhaps it is better for me to do it on T-shirts for people to know who the individual is.
“(It is) selling for only RM26 (not 2.6 billion),” he added in reference to the sum in Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s personal bank accounts, which has been described as a political donation.
The cartoonist expressed hope that people would wear the T-shirt to show their protest against “MO1".
"We are paying for their corruption,” he added.
The T-shirt, which comes in two colours - black and white - is available online via his Facebook "Zunar Cartoonist Fan Club" or his official website www.zunar.my
In the filings, the DOJ claimed that a total of US$731 million traceable to 1MDB went to the account of "Malaysian Official 1”.
Asked why the person was not named, US attorney-general Loretta E Lynch had said that a civil complaint traced the movement of the assets and would only "allege what we need to allege to obtain what we need to obtain".
After the civil suits were filed, Malaysians were faced with a poser over who Malaysian Official 1 might be.
Though the authorities have been silent on this issue, the opposition claimed that it referred to Najib.
DAP lawmaker Tony Pua was yesterday quizzed by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) over his Facebook postings on "Malaysian Official 1” as he had claimed that the individual was none other than the prime minister. - Mkini
