The beds-and-ice cream protest by Sungai Besar Umno chief Jamal Md Yunos yesterday garnered praise from Local Government and Urban Wellbeing Minister Noh Omar.
On Wednesday, Jamal set up 10 single beds and gave out free ice cream and even had a massage demonstration in front of the Selangor state secretariat building in Shah Alam, to protest what he claimed was a proliferation of massage parlours fronting as brothels in the state.
"I see it as a proactive move since there have been many complaints by NGOs, including Umno Youth on this, but no action has been taken.
"There were all sorts of allegations that there were many illicit massage parlours in Selangor when BN was in power (before 2008), but there are three or four times more under this administration," he was quoted as saying by website Selangor Post.
The Umno Selangor chief made the remarks at a press conference after a meeting with federal agency department heads in Selangor today, the website said.
Jamal also garnered praise from Umno supreme council member Puad Zarkashi, who congratulated the Umno leader for his novel way of protesting.
"It was a strange method, but it attracted attention and put pressure on the authorities. This way, the Selangor government can no longer close their eyes...
"He is creative and he knows how to pick the right issues which concern the rakyat. He is bold yet casual, and better than the Bersih demonstration that did not get anywhere," Puad, who is Special Affairs Department (Jasa) director said.
Jamal yesterday said the free ice cream, which he gave away from the back of his Harley Davidson, was a reference to sexual services given by masseurs at illicit parlours.
The ice cream box was labelled "Azmin ice cream", seemingly in reference to a sex scandal allegation which Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali denied.
Jamal, however, claimed it was not related to the MB in any way.
The pillowcases and his T-shirt had the words DAP - Dapat Aiskrim Percuma (DAP - Get Free Ice Cream).
He also dubbed the protest "Rumah Urut Selangorku" (My Selangor Massage Parlours), a play on the state's affordable homes policy "Rumah Selangorku" (My Selangor Home).- Mkini
