Anti-Mahathir camp will lose in party polls, says PPBM man

Under an agreement struck by PH, Dr Mahathir Mohamad will hand over the prime-ministership to Anwar Ibrahim although no time frame has been specified. (Bernama pic)
PETALING JAYA: A PPBM Supreme Council member has predicted defeat in the coming party polls for any anti-Mahathir faction that may exist.
The party’s grassroots would not tolerate such a camp, Akhramsyah Muammar Ubaidah Sanusi told FMT.
He was commenting on an FMT report quoting an unnamed PPBM insider as saying there existed a group in the party that was aiding efforts to push Dr Mahathir Mohamad out of the prime minister’s office to enable Anwar Ibrahim to take over.
Akhramsyah indicated he doubted the verity of the claim and said it was regrettable that the person who made it had chosen to hide his identity and had therefore gone against the party’s call for members to speak up with courage.
The anonymous source, like Akhramsyah, is a staunch Mahathir supporter. He said he could not wait for the party polls to see the pro-Anwar faction flushed out.
Akhramsyah said he respected Mahathir’s decision to hand over the reins of government to Anwar “at the right time” and added that he and many others in PPBM were praying that the prime minister would remain healthy so that he could continue to serve the nation “for as long as possible”.
Under an agreement struck by Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders, Mahathir has to hand over his post to Anwar eventually, but no time frame has been specified.
“It must be frustrating to some isolated figures in PPBM who may be anti-Tun that the party remains steadfast behind his leadership despite his intention not to serve his full term,” Akhramsyah said.
He said his own preference was for another PPBM leader, such as party president Muhyiddin Yassin, to succeed Mahathir as prime minister but added that he would abide by any PH decision.
“Of course, such a decision will not be PPBM’s alone, but PH’s,” he said.
He urged PH leaders to stop debating on the succession plan and to focus on ensuring the success of the current leadership of the country. - FMT
