Malay chamber plans legal action against Alhabshee’s group

Malay Chamber of Commerce president Rizal Faris Mohideen Abdul Kader.
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malay Chamber of Commerce (DPMM) intends to take legal action against 18 members including the former deputy president Syed Hussein Alhabshee for alleged misuse of the chamber’s name and facilities.
Chamber president Rizal Faris Mohideen Abdul Kader said the relevant action would be taken as soon as possible on the advice of the chamber’s lawyer.
“We are taking this action after the decision made by resolution at our annual meeting today,” he said.
He accused the group of having used the chamber’s letterhead and holding a meeting with a minister while posing as association members. He said they were no longer members of the chamber since November. He also alleged they had spread false information.
Rizal said a police report had been lodged and the chamber was awaiting further investigation by police.
Rizal said that he had been elected as chamber president at yesterday’s AGM, at which Don Nazwim Don Najib was elected deputy president. Three new vice-presidents were also elected: AG Buhtamam AG Mahmun, Rozman Isli and Mohd Fadzli Mustafa.
At the centre of the dispute between the chamber and the 18 members is an allocation of RM5 million from the Prime Minister’s Office.
Syed Hussein and the 17 others had filed a suit two months ago accusing Rizal of misuse of the RM5 million allocation. They alleged that the money was deposited into the account of Yayasan DPMM Pulau Pinang Berhad without approval.
They also claimed that RM1 million was credited to the chamber from a company known as Redberry and that Rizal had decided to use the money for an election campaign, also without getting approval from the chamber.
Syed Hussein and his group also sued the chamber, president and secretary-general, seeking a court order for an extraordinary general meeting to be held to account for how the RM5 million was spent. - FMT
