ANWAR Ibrahim has said that repeatedly questioning when Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad will hand over the reins to him will only cause tension between the two men.
“You cannot ask a sitting prime minister about a transition (of power)… we have an understanding that we talk about every week… I am satisfied with my meetings with Dr Mahathir and for me the issue is settled, if you want to know what we talk about, wait and find out.
“Such questions are meant to create tension,” Anwar told the media at the Lembah Pantai constituency Hari Raya Open house this evening.
Dr Mahathir, in a session of The Future of Malaysia and Asean at the 5th Bloomberg Asean Business Summit in Bangkok yesterday said that he will hold true to his promise and hand over power.
Dr Mahathir said he would stick to his promise to pass the baton to PKR president Anwar Ibrahim.
Asked whether Anwar was ready for the job, Dr Mahathir said: “It’s not a question of whether he is ready or not. I made a promise and I’ll keep my promise.”
Dr Mahathir said that he will not leave Malaysia in shambles when he steps down, which some quarters took to mean that he may not keep to his promise of stepping down after two years.
The issue has been hotly debated by several PKR and Bersatu leaders.
Several PKR leaders, including Kedah PKR chairman Johari Abdul, PKR Central Leadership Council member Abdullah Sani Abdul Hamid and pressure group Otai Reformasi, have been pressuring Mahathir to announce a date for the hand over.
Selangor Bersatu treasurer Mohd Shaid Rosli today openly said the party is confident of its strength and will defend Dr Mahathir if his leadership is challenged.
