PKR president Anwar Ibrahim has expressed his sympathy for his deputy Mohamed Azmin Ali, who has been implicated in a number of sex videos which were distributed widely last week.
"The leadership rejects gutter politics and we express sympathy to him and his family," Anwar said in a media conference at PKR headquarters in Petaling Jaya today.
Santubong PKR Youth chief Haziq Abdullah Abdul Aziz made a confession last week that he was one of the men in the videos, and claimed that the other man was Azmin.
Anwar's statement comes amid mixed reactions from various parties in PKR regarding the issue, including Anwar's aide Farhash Wafa Salvador Mubarak.
Yesterday, Farhash said that Azmin should resign if there is overwhelming evidence against him.
"Azmin must quit if he is guilty," he said.
Meanwhile, Azmin's adviser Khalid Jaafar had warned that lack of action against Haziq would be perceived as a failure on the part of Anwar, and tarnish PKR's image among the Malays and Muslims.
It was reported earlier today that PKR will issue a show-cause letter against Haziq for making a public statement that tarnished the party's image.
Meanwhile, Anwar said Azmin’s situation is different from what the former deputy prime minister faced in the past.
"The scenario and issue are different," he said.
Anwar was imprisoned twice on charges of sodomy, but was released in May 2018.
This came after Pakatan Harapan’s win in the 14th general election, when the Yang di-Pertuan Agong granted him a royal pardon. - Mkini
