Assemblyman lodges MACC report against council chief

PUTRAJAYA: A DAP assemblyman today lodged an MACC report against a local council president alleging corrupt practices and abuse of power in dealing with a Chinese company handling plastic waste.
Ronnie Liu said he decided to lodge the report after losing patience with Sepang Municipal Council president Mohd Fauzi Mohd Yatim, whom he claimed was adamant in not taking action against the factory despite various complaints made.
According to Liu, residents in Sepang and Sungai Pelek had protested against the factory for causing air pollution.
The residents claimed the factory was operating illegally as a licence was issued without a development order or an Environment Impact Assessment (EIA).
“Fauzi refused to accept the decision made by the Sepang municipal councillors who rejected the granting of the licence on May 28,” Liu told reporters after lodging the report with the anti-graft agency.
Liu, who is the assemblyman for Sungai Pelek, said he met with Fauzi before the Hari Raya celebrations to discuss the shutting down of the factory but till today, no notice had been taken.
“I tried calling him but he never got back to me,” he said.
Fauzi denied Liu’s claims, saying he had sent a notice to the factory informing them that their licence had been revoked two days ago.
He also said that after the Sepang councillors decided on the matter, they issued a notice to cancel the factory’s temporary licence.
“Yes, we revoked the licence but that doesn’t mean we have to act on it the very same day. But it is his right to lodge a report with the MACC although I must stress that I am not involved in any corrupt practices,” he said.
Fauzi also said he will not take orders from Liu, whom he accused of playing to the gallery.
“I am not interested in entertaining him. He is a politician and I am a civil servant. I have to follow the laws and standard operating procedures.

“We will give the factory seven days to shut down.” - FMT
