Arau MP Shahidan Kassim (above) wants Perlis Menteri Besar Azlan Man to answer allegations that politicians in the state helped their friends to dodge RM26.4 million in taxes every year.
This is after the Raja of Perlis Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail rebuked several unnamed local politicians for abetting such illicit activities.
"Azlan has to answer. Perlis Umno will ask for an explanation because this involves politicians," Shahidan told Malaysiakini.
Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin had on Thursday said Perlis was supposed to earn around RM128.9 million from taxes annually.
However, the monarch said several politicians had used their influence to get tax collectors to give their associates more time to pay their taxes which in the end they never paid.
Shahidan said if these allegations were true, those involved should face the law.
He urged the Raja of Perlis to also make public the names of the politicians concerned.
"If the Raja can name them it would be good so action can be taken against these politicians. Mentioning politicians in general is not good because those who are not involved get flak too," he said.
Shahidan, who was Perlis menteri besar from 1995 until 2008, said he could not recall such things happening when he was heading the state government.
