GEORGE TOWN: A major water pipe in Butterworth is reported to have burst at 5.30pm today, disrupting supplies to about 200,000 users in the central and southern districts of mainland Seberang Perai.
Perai, Bukit Mertajam, Nibong Tebal and Batu Kawan are the main towns in the two districts.
The Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBA) said water output to the districts has dropped by 21.5% or 230 million litres per day as a result. Low water pressure and unscheduled supply interruptions could be expected.
Emergency repairs have begun on the pipe at Sungai Dua water treatment plant, the main source of treated water for Penangites.
“This mishap will cause low water pressure or unscheduled water supply interruptions in certain areas that will potentially affect about 200,000 registered water consumers in the Central and Southern Seberang Perai districts,” PBA said in its official Facebook page. - FMT
