Islamic law can end sex video scandals, says PAS ulama chief

PAS MUKTAMAR | The controversial sex video scandal currently implicating politicians will not drag on if Islamic law is enforced in Malaysia, according to PAS Dewan Ulama chief Nik Zawawi Salleh (above).
Under the current system, Nik Zawawi claimed that the affected parties are at a loss when faced with such a situation.
At the same time, he also claimed that the present system had failed to crack down on the distribution of such sex videos despite past experiences in dealing with similar scandals involving high-ranking politicians.
"This is not the first time such a thing has happened. In the past, it (allegation of a sex scandal) happened to Datuk Seri Anwar (Ibrahim) and there was no clear way (under the law) on how to deal with the issue.
"Now it happens again and there is still no clear way," Nik Zawawi told reporters after the launch of the 65th PAS muktamar (general assembly) at Sukpa Stadium in Kuantan yesterday.
"That is why [...] I hope the rakyat will remain calm and view this matter from the perspective of Islam [...] (only then) this issue will die down," he said.
Last week, unknown individuals had leaked via several WhatsApp chat groups sex video clips allegedly of Economic Affairs Minister Mohamed Azmin Ali and PKR Santubong Youth chief Haziq Abdullah Abdul Aziz.
Following that, in a "confession" posted onto his Facebook page, Haziq claimed to be one of the two individuals in the video clips.
He also claimed that Azmin was the other man and that their alleged tryst was recorded in a hotel room in Sandakan during the by-election there last month.
Azmin has described the videos as a plot to ruin his political career. Police are currently investigating the videos to determine if they are authentic.
In 2011, a sex video purportedly of PKR president Anwar Ibrahim and a woman was released by the "Datuk T trio" (three individuals who held "Datuk" titles) and was widely viewed by the public.
The first sex video scandal involving a Malaysian politician, however, dates back to the late 1980s when VHS tapes purportedly depicting then-Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker DP Vijandran having sex with several women emerged.
Commenting further, Zawawi said Islamic law had a clear and strict provision to deal with not only with same-sex and sex outside of marriage offenders but also to punish those who made such allegations without proof.
"So if Islamic law is enforced, I am confident that the people who make these allegations will not dare to share it as widely as they are doing now.
"And for the person who is targetted, if proven, they will not dare to commit such vile acts. This is the approach in Islam," he explained.
Given the alleged failure of the current civil law system, Zawawi argued that people, therefore, should support PAS' aim to enforce Islamic law in Malaysia.
Since the scandal broke, PAS leaders have maintained that Haziq, who had confessed to committing the depicted acts in the videos, should be punished.
PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man on Wednesday had also expressed agreement with Dewan Rakyat speaker Mohamad Ariff Mohd Yusof that the video issue should not be discussed in the next Dewan Rakyat sitting beginning July 1. - Mkini
