Malaysians dressed in black gather in solidarity with HK protesters

In a show of solidarity with protesters in Hong Kong, a group of about 50 Malaysians rallied in Kuala Lumpur today against the region's proposed extradition law with mainland China.
However, police barred protesters from marching towards the city centre.
Protesters gathered outside the Kuala Lumpur Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall (KLSCAH) from 2.45pm, dressed in black and carrying placards that read "Solidarity with Hong Kong" and "Anti-extradition law."
After being blocked from marching, the crowd staged a silent protest by sitting on the road in front of KLSCAH.
More than 60 police personnel were deployed at the scene. A police officer, who declined to be named, told reporters that the personnel came from the various stations around the city.
Dang Wangi police chief Mohd Fahmi Visuvanathan (photo) said, meanwhile, that police will conduct an investigation as organisers gave no notice of the assembly.

He also denied that the police received instructions to stop the protest.
"No, we did not receive any instructions from anybody, but we were informed that the assembly would be held, that is the reason we are here," he told reporters outside KLSCAH.
"We just want to make sure that the assembly takes place in a proper and peaceful manner.
"Since no notice was given, most probably we may investigate further under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012," he said.
Fahmi added that two women from China observing the protest were also detained, though their arrests were made under immigration law.
"We detained them under immigration law because they were unable to produce any identification documents.
"When you enter our country, you must have a passport and valid travel documents with you," he said. - Mkini
