'Many more' to be slapped with 1MDB civil forfeiture suits, reveals MACC

The MACC will file more civil forfeiture suits related to the 1MDB scandal, according to deputy commissioner for operations Azam Baki.
Last week, the commission had filed suits worth RM270 million against 41 local individuals and groups.
Asked if there would be more, Azam replied: “Yes, many more.”
Responding to another question if there were those slapped with the suits who have returned the money, he answered in the affirmative.
“Yes... after we filed (the civil forfeiture suits), there were firms who returned the funds through their lawyers,” he added.
However, he declined to reveal the quantum for now.
Azam, who was speaking to reporters outside the Jalan Duta Court Complex in Kuala Lumpur this morning, said those who have been named in the civil forfeiture suits, can challenge the matter.
During a press conference last week, newly minted MACC chief commissioner Latheefa Koya said the RM270 million sought had been distributed to the respondents from former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak's personal AmBank account.
Of this sum, RM212 million (78.5 percent) was sought from Umno, the party's state chapters and the Pekan division.
Corruption probe against Azmin
In an unrelated development, Azam also commented on the investigations into the corruption allegations against Economic Affairs Minister Azmin Ali.
He said investigations so far have revealed that the transaction and bank account mentioned did not exist.
The deputy commissioner noted that both UEM and Maybank had issued statements regarding this matter.
“During investigations, we will call certain individuals. I cannot tell you who they are as it will affect the investigation process,” he added.
Previously, Malayan Banking Bhd (Maybank) clarified that the fund transfer advice document circulated online, which alleged a transfer of money to Azmin using the bank’s account, was forged.
UEM Group Bhd also shot down claims that it was involved in the transfer.
Apart from the corruption allegation, Azmin has also been implicated in a sex video, which is under police investigation.
The minister, who is also PKR deputy president, has described this as a nefarious plot to ruin his political career. - Mkini
