MCMC tracking down perpetrators of sex videos of 'minister'

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is putting the investigation into the viral sex clips implicating Mohamed Azmin Ali as the top priority in its bid to track down the perpetrators responsible for spreading the clips.
MCMC chairperson Al-Ishsal Ishak (photo, above) said MCMC, as part of the Cyber Crime Committee with the police's Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID), has started the investigation upon receiving a police report filed on Tuesday.
"We are doing our normal course of investigation with the police in expediting the matter because this is a case of national importance.
"We are working on it, and we are working very hard," Al-Ishsal told the media at MCMC headquarters in Putrajaya today.
The clips, shared by certain anonymous individuals via WhatsApp on Tuesday, shows a sexual act between two men, one of them said to be looking like the economic affairs minister.
Santubong PKR Youth chief Haziq Abdullah Abdul Aziz (photo) has confessed that he was one of the duo in the video, while Azmin has denied claims that it is he in the video.
On Wednesday, the perpetrators shared another video clip via WhatsApp with the media and PKR personalities.
Haziq has also filed a police report with the intent to rebut accusations against him by several parties, including "netizens and cyber troopers".
Yesterday, Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador confirmed that police were in the midst of investigating the matter and that they may, or may not, call the individuals in the clip.
Commenting on the video, Al-Ishsal said it was clear, upon looking at the video, that it had been premeditated.
"As Malaysians, we don't want to live among this kind of people - who unnecessarily abuse the technology to spread vulgar and obscene content," he said.
MCMC looking into digital ID
Al-Ishsal noted that the registration of mobile phone numbers is not efficient.
"The law says you have to register (your personal details) for a mobile number. But one can register using the identity of another person. So this is the problem.
"We are scrutinising this issue and will deal with it step by step."
Looking forward, Al-Ishsal said that digital ID, on which the MCMC is conducting research, would be one of the potential tools to monitor online activities and eradicate fake digital accounts.
"It may be one of the potential tools, not only for Malaysia but for other countries, where we will have a digital ID similar to a physical identification card."
Without revealing numbers, Al-Ishsal said fake accounts, harassments and defamations have been at the top of complaints made to the MCMC for the past three years.  - Mkini
