THE Klang Municipal Council (MPK) - with the cooperation of the Port Klang Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) - has cut off electricity supply to a plastic waste processing plant at the Air Hitam Industrial Area, in bid to stop its illegal operations.
MPK Licensing Department deputy director Mohd Fahrulisa Mohd Isa said the council was forced to disconnect the electricity supply, as the plastic waste processing plant was defiant and continued to operate despite being sealed five times.
“Until now, we have closed six such illegal plastic waste processing factories within the vicinity of Jalan Permata 9/KS9 in the Air Hitam Industrial Area. Also closed are two factories in Telok Gong and two more in Pulau Indah, Port Klang, bringing the total to 10.
“Our enforcement task force is planning to take action against another 31 such factories in Klang. But, for us to do so, we need the approval from the Energy Commission of Malaysia to allow TNB to act,” he said on Monday (June 23).
TNB Port Klang Credit Control officer Nurul Huda Mohd Taufek said TNB was willing to work with MPK to close down unscrupulous factories, as long as the necessary requirements and approvals are met.
Mohd Fahrulisa said the two buildings that were shut down earlier in the day were sealed last Wednesday (June 19) for the fifth time, but were still illegally processing plastic materials which were believed to have been imported from China, Japan and Europe.

Workers believed to be foreigners ran off on seeing the MPK officers. Large bags labelled as chicken feed but contained plastic pellets were found at the site.
An overpowering chemical smell waft through the facility, causing one or two officers to suffer headaches during the operations.
Mohd Fahrulisa said that the factory was believed to have been operating since three years ago, and it had not obtained any licence from the council.
Asked about the factory owner, Fahrulisa said “court action would be taken against the person”.
“Our task force is still working hard to shut down other illegal plastic factories but it takes time as there a need to follow procedures. We will focus on the Air Hitam Industrial Area in this few months,” he added. Star
