Mujahid not defending Penang Amanah chief post in party polls

Mujahid Yusof Rawa says he is not defending his post as Penang Amanah chief in the next party election, in view of his federal commitments as the de facto Islamic affairs minister.
Mujahid said it was time to give the opportunity and space to others to lead Amanah in Penang.
"After discussing the matter with my comrades, other leaders and my family, I wish to announce that I will not defend my post in the party in the next term," he told at a press conference after attending Amanah's Aidilfitri celebrations in Kepala Batas.
"I believe Penang Amanah will continue to prosper. God willing, I will continue to help and support Amanah, which I always feel is my baby."
Mujahid said that since its inception, Amanah has always talked about "new dimensions in political Islam" when discussing the issue of democracy.
It was the people's support for Amanah in 2015 which gave rise to the party's branches in other states, he noted.
"Penang Amanah is one of the earliest to be formed due to the support and commitment of our members who wish to see change in our country.
"I, who led Penang's new hope movement, continued to lead the state Amanah leadership," recalled the Parit Buntar MP.
Mujahid said Penang Amanah grew in a "very positive manner," and contested one parliamentary and three state seats in last year's general election.
"We managed to win two state seats in Penang and garnered a significant amount of votes in the grand election," he added.
Currently, Amanah leaders are involved in GLCs and local councils.
When Harapan won at the federal level, Mujahid said he was given a "big role" in building the 'New Malaysia' with his cabinet colleagues.
"This role demands of me a high level of commitment, time and effort."
Amanah will carry out a nationwide election this year, with the state annual general meetings to be held on July 1 to Aug 31. - Mkini
