New party to replace Umno? Zahid leaves it to Mat Hasan

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has begun to make formal appearances at the annual general assembly of party divisions, despite still being on leave.
However, when asked about suggestions from within that a new party may be set up to replace Umno, Zahid passed the ball to his deputy and acting president Mohamad Hasan.
"Ask the person who is carrying out the duties of the president," he told journalists after officiating the Masjid Tanah Umno AGM.
Zahid was asked to respond to Johor Umno chief Hasni Mohammad's comment that a new party may be formed if Umno were to be disbanded.
Hasni said this amid an onslaught of money laundering charges faced by the party, and the freezing of its bank accounts.
'Strategic moves'
When contacted, Mohamad said he hopes the speculation about Umno's disbandment is just that.
He said, however, that Umno has strategies to deal with any possibilities.
"Umno Malaysia has a few strategic moves to deal with any possibilities," he said. "We pray that it is only a rumour and won't become a reality."
Zahid went on leave in December last year amid pressure for him to step aside.
His opponents had accused him of failing to provide direction to Umno. His tenure also saw an exodus of lawmakers to Bersatu.
He finally relented and handed over duties to Mohamad, and limited his public appearances at formal party events until recently.
