PAS supporters' wing believes that PAS is committed to maintaining vernacular schools in Malaysia “forever”.
In a statement today, the wing's secretary S Barathidasan (photo, above) said PAS was always fair and transparent to all Malaysians.
Referring to calls at the party's annual national delegates meeting over the weekend which demanded Putrajaya shut down Chinese and Tamil schools, Barathidasan said this was not PAS' policy.
”A difference in opinion among party delegates is normal during (AGM) debates. It is not a policy decision by the party.
”Not every proposal will be accepted by PAS and its syura council," said Barathidasan in a statement today.
To back his claim, Barathidasan said even the grandchildren of PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang and the late Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat were studying in Chinese schools.
During the delegate's meeting over the weekend, PAS women's wing delegate Salamiah Md Nor wanted vernacular schools abolished because the wing was “unwilling for Mandarin to become a second (national) language”.
Although Salamiah received support from the delegates, party leaders cautiously provided alternative solutions towards fostering national unity in schools.
PAS central committee member Dr Halimah Ali said the party should learn from the success of vernacular schools to improve its own academic institutions. - Mkini
