GEORGE TOWN: A plan is underway to return the monies donated to the media that purportedly came from 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), says Penang Press Club president Wong Soon Eng.
"We are holding an emergency meeting on Thursday (June 27) to agree on the best channel to use to send the money back," said Wong.
Wong also said that the donation came from the 1Malaysia Penang Welfare Club, adding that the press club received a donation of RM50,000 during the 2013 General Election season, along with other associations and clubs.
The 1Malaysia Penang Welfare Club was registered on June 29, 2012, and dissolved on Feb 27, 2014.
In 2013, the club held many events and donated millions of ringgit to many charities and social bodies.
The club also held many public dinners serving Penang hawker food and organised charity concerts, with 22 well-known Hong Kong, American, Bollywood and Malaysian singers performing.
In 2015, when Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng was Penang Chief Minister, he claimed that fugitive businessman Jho Low was actively involved in that short-lived club.- Star
