Police are unconcerned about the possibility of Haziq Abdullah Abdul Aziz, who is at the heart of a sex video scandal implicating Economic Affairs Minister Mohamed Azmin Ali, fleeing the country.
This follows Haziq, the Santubong PKR Youth chief, being released from police custody on bail last Saturday without any travel restrictions.
Speaking to reporters in Bukit Aman today, Deputy Inspector-General of Police Mazlan Mansor said that his officers have an "agreement" with Haziq.
"We have an agreement (persetujuan) with him, and he gave his full cooperation," he said.
Mazlan also said that the police probe into the matter is ongoing, and that the deputy public prosecutor will decide on the next course of action once investigation papers have been submitted.
"The investigation is ongoing. Police have received 17 reports and recorded 21 statements," he said.
Mazlan (photo) refused to divulge any details of the investigation, however, as he did not want a "trial by media."
'No need for foreign experts'
Asked if the police would enlist international experts to help ascertain the authenticity of the sex videos, Mazlan said that there is no need for that at present.
When pressed on whether Azmin's statement has been recorded, the DIGP only reiterated that "the investigation is ongoing."
Earlier, Mazlan witnessed a duty handover ceremony between the outgoing Commercial Crime Investigation Department acting director Saiful Azly Kamaruddin and his replacement, former Pahang police chief Mohd Zakaria Ahmad.
Azmin came under the spotlight after Haziq claimed that he and the minister were the individuals shown the sex video clips, which were first disseminated to media and PKR members last week.
Haziq was arrested at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport on Friday as he was awaiting a flight to Manila.
He is being investigated under four laws, including Section 377B of the Penal Code for carnal intercourse against the order of nature, and Section 292 for distribution of obscene materials.
Haziq has also been suspended from his duties as senior private secretary to Deputy Primary Industries Minister Shamsul Iskandar Md Akin.
Azmin, the deputy PKR president, has denied the allegation, calling it "character assassination" aimed at putting an end to his political career. - mkini
