Protesting cabbies fail to meet minister or his deputy

Despite gathering over a hundred taxi drivers to protest outside the Transport Ministry office in Putrajaya today, Gabungan Teksi SeMalaysia (GTSM) failed in their mission to deliver a memorandum to the Transport Minister or his deputy.
GTSM were protesting over what they claimed to be discrimination of taxi drivers and support for the growing e-hailing services in Malaysia.
Among the messages written on the placards carried by the taxi drivers included "Tun M, please save our rice bowls" and "Rule of Law".
GTSM president Kamarudin Hussain said the protesting group wanted to hand over the memorandum personally to either minister Anthony Loke or his deputy Kamaruddin Jaffar.
After about 30 minutes, they were received by Loke's political secretary Dahlan Maamor. But the group refused to hand over their memorandum to him and insisted on meeting a higher-ranked officer.
When approached by the media, Dahlan stressed that the ministry did not discriminate against the taxi drivers, but they should learn to adapt to changes in technology.
"They should follow current developments and what is happening around the world. The taxi drivers need to change to compete with the e-hailing services," said Dahlan.
Dahlan also said taxi drivers still hold several advantages over their e-hailing service counterparts, citing lower toll charges imposed for taxis as an example.
Last year, Loke announced that regulations will be imposed on e-hailing services to meet taxi standards and create a level playing field between both industries.
The GTSM group also went to the Prime Minister’s Department in Putrajaya today to send a memorandum. - Mkini
