PETALING JAYA: Nearly 30,000 people have signed a petition seeking answers from the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) on the acquittal of Ambika MA Shan who was charged with murdering her domestic worker Adelina Lisao.
They also want the Domestic Workers’ Bill to be tabled, debated and passed in Parliament as soon as possible.
The petition, started by human rights group Tenaganita, is addressed to AG Tommy Thomas, Human Resources Minister M Kula Segaran and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Parliamentary Affairs) Liew Vui Keong.
Ambika was charged with murdering Adelina but was found not guilty by the High Court.
It was reported that neighbours had spotted Adelina sleeping with a dog in the compound of Ambika’s home and that there were burn marks and bruises on her body.
The petition said human rights groups had documented thousands of cases of domestic workers held in slavery and forced labour, with many suffering abuse, torture, starvation, sexual abuse, and being denied wages and treated in “other heinous ways”.
“Adelina isn’t the first, and she won’t be the last unless we act right now to change this culture of violence and slavery in Malaysia,” the petition says.
The petition also urges the AGC to “use every possible legal avenue” to ensure justice for Adelina.
At the time of writing, 28,900 of a targeted 35,000 had signed the petition. - FMT
