Select committee postpones meeting to July 4 as Latheefa ‘unavailable’

The Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) on Major Appointments has postponed its meeting with new MACC chief Latheefa Koya to July 4.
According to committee chairperson William Leong, Latheefa was “not available” to be questioned today, as originally scheduled.
“She requested for a postponement.
“It has been postponed to Thursday July 4, when Parliament sits - at 2.30pm, at Parliament,” Leong told Malaysiakini when contacted today.
The PKR Selayang MP previously said that the PSC wanted to grill Latheefa on three issues with regard to her appointment - her impartiality as a former PKR member; how she intended to combat corruption given her lack of experience; as well as on her vision and mission for the anti-graft agency.
Latheefa’s appointment, announced earlier this month after Mohd Shukri Abdull decided to shorten his tenure as the MACC chief, was met with intense criticism due to her political past.
She previously helmed PKR’s legal affairs bureau, and quit the party when she was given her new government role.
Furthermore, her appointment had bypassed both the cabinet and Parliament.
Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad admitted to unilaterally choosing the former legal aid NGO Lawyers for Liberty executive director as he did not want to be restricted by the opinions of others.
The premier stood by his move and maintained that he had not needed to consult Leong’s committee as the PSC “could not function legally yet” without the necessary constitutional amendments.
In response, Leong had requested to meet Mahathir to explain to him the PSC’s oversight role.
Asked today, he said the PSC had yet to obtain a meeting with the prime minister.  - mkini
