PUTRAJAYA: Those closest to Lee Chong Wei, including his wife and former coach, are happy that he has made the decision to retire.
Chong Wei’s wife, Wong Mew Choo, a former national shuttler herself, said it was time for him to enjoy his life.
“For him, badminton has been his life, so, this is the time to let him rest and enjoy his life,” Mew Choo told reporters on the sidelines of Chong Wei’s press conference today, where he announced his retirement.
She also said she wants him to get enough rest before deciding on his future plans.
“I think everyone was worried when he restarted training after his treatment but as an athlete, they have to try first and he did,” she said, referring to Chong Wei’s cancer scare.
“But the doctor said for now, he has to cut back on pressure, that’s why I think his decision is good for him.”
His former coach, Tey Siew Bok, said he was glad Chong Wei was retiring as his health was more important.
“I’m happy because he no longer has to carry a burden,” he said.
Tey said Chong Wei was was so dedicated to the sport that he would not take any training sessions or tournaments lightly.
“That’s why I am happy.
“My most memorable moment with him is each of his finals he’s won, because it’s not easy to win,” he said.
He added that it was difficult to find players with Chong Wei’s attitude and dedication.
Chong Wei is hanging up his racquet after 19 years as a professional.
The former World No. 1 has won a total of 69 titles, including 47 Badminton World Federation Superseries titles.
This earned him the “King of Superseries” moniker.
He also won three consecutive Olympic silver medals and five Commonwealth gold medals.
He and Mew Choo have two sons – Kingston, six, and Terrance, four. - FMT
