PELANGAI BY-ELECTION | Amanah vice-president Mahfuz Omar last night criticised PAS leaders and its ulama for not reprimanding Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor for cursing in his speeches.
He said it was akin to the Islamist party’s religious leaders giving Sanusi a "cop halal" (halal certification) to speak ill about others.
"What puzzles me is how (PAS) leaders and their senior ulama keep quiet (about Sanusi cursing during ceramah).
"It was like the ulama gave him 'cop halal', that he can curse and insult others," Mahfuz (above, left) said during a ceramah in Felda Kemasul, Bentong.
He was there to campaign for BN candidate Amizar Abu Adam, who is running in the Pelangai state seat by-election against PAS' Kasim Samat and independent candidate Haslihelmy DM Zuhasli.
It was understood that the former Pokok Sena MP was referring to a series of Sanusi speeches in Pelangai last week, where the Perikatan Nasional election director had mocked Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
Sanusi had also referred to Ipoh Timor MP Howard Lee as "**** tak kerat" (uncircumcised) man when criticising the DAP representative over a recent incident, where Lee had allegedly made his own interpretation of a Quranic verse.
Felda Kemasul was one of the venues where Sanusi delivered his campaign speeches last week.
Adding further, Mahfuz told the audience that it was unbecoming for Sanusi, who represents an Islamist party, to use bad words and speak ill about others in his speeches.
"I believe that Muslims, especially PAS leaders whose staunch followers believe that they always recite the Quran and praise Prophet Muhammad, should come and show good examples to the people.
"Especially when we are now celebrating the prophet's birthday, we should be speaking about his sunnah, about the prophet's good values.
"The leaders should teach the people here about the prophet's way of life, instead of cursing others," he said.
Branding PAS as a "parti mencarut" (a party that uses cuss words), Mahfuz said Pelangai voters should refrain from supporting its candidate.
"To me, if we want to fight in politics, bring it on. We can have different political views but don’t ever insult and mock others," he said.
During Sanusi's speech in a PN ceramah last week, the menteri besar had made fun of Anwar over the prime minister's speech at the United Nations General Assembly and giving a Friday prayer sermon in New York.
He claimed that the venue where Anwar was addressing the UN was empty as the international community purportedly knew that Anwar was a liar, while the prime minister's Friday prayer sermon was to deceive the people in New York.
Going too far
Another speaker at last night's ceramah, BN secretary-general Zambry Abdul Kadir also criticised Sanusi.
"It was too much for him to call (the prime minister) lying in his Friday sermon.
"Do you think it’s okay for him to insult a person who delivers a sermon to that extent?" he said.
He said such insulting speeches were signs of a dirty soul described in Islam as “ghibah” (backbiting) and “namimah” (spreading malicious gossip).
"We should not go overboard in our speech. The religious teachers here can tell you, this is an issue of 'ghibah' and 'namimah', which are the two major illnesses in the human soul.
"When one has these illnesses, they will always use bad and insulting words because they come from within their dirty soul," he said.
