Anti-graft agency MACC has denied it was behind a Bersatu MP’s recent declaration of support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki said the claims that they intimidated Kuala Kangsar MP Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid to support the current government were meant to tarnish the reputation of the agency.
“The statement by the opposition leader alleging we had a hand in the MP’s decision is ill-intended and is an attempt to tarnish the MACC’s image.
“The fact is, we had nothing to do with the statement he (Iskandar) made,” said Azam (above), as reported by The Star.
This comes after Perikatan Nasional secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin claimed Iskandar was threatened with corruption charges to force him to support the current federal government.
Hamzah further alleged that Iskandar was forced to throw his support behind the government so that the federal administration would again have a two-thirds majority in Parliament.
The coalition government lost its two-thirds majority in the Dewan Rakyat after Muda president and Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman withdrew his support.
On Oct 12, Iskandar publicly voiced his support for Anwar’s premiership, adding that his decision was also meant to test whether the prime minister was sincere in providing allocation to any MP who supports the government’s policies.
Iskandar has remained tightlipped about the claims despite multiple attempts to contact him. - Mkini
