No party polls for Bersatu's top positions this year - report

Bersatu will not hold elections for the party’s top posts, supreme council, and division levels this year.

This is after the party last May decided to postpone all elections for up to 18 months to prepare for the six state elections.

Bersatu information chief Razali Idris told Utusan Malaysia that the party will hold elections at branch levels at the end of this year.

“Not many understand Bersatu’s election mechanism. The fact is that there will not be elections for the top leadership this year; only branch-level elections will be held.

“Thus, it is ridiculous to claim that there will be two elections in Bersatu this year,” he told the Malay daily, responding to claims that the party will see leadership change after the Johor twin by-elections.

On another matter, Razali also echoed Bersatu deputy president Ahmad Faizal Azumu’s denial of factionalism within the party.

Yesterday, Utusan, quoting sources, reported that Bersatu is divided into two factions - one aligned with president Muhyiddin Yassin and another with secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin.

According to the report, the two are not on the same page in charting the party’s direction.

Commenting further, Razali said the party “does not have time” to be fragmented as it needs to focus on the upcoming party elections.

“One of the reasons we postponed the party polls is because we need to ‘fix’ the branches first, especially after the 15th general election. For example, the situation in Sabah where the top leadership left the party.

“So, we need to convene first to appoint new delegates,” Razali said. - Mkini
