PARLIAMENT | The 'Ah Long' (unlicensed money lenders) menace is still rampant as there is still high demand from the public, Deputy Home Minister Shamsul Anuar Nasarah said.
According to him, people also fall for the "too-good-to-be-true" offers from loan shark syndicates, which are easier to acquire than loans from licensed money lenders or banks.
"(The authorities) conducted a total of 734 operations nationwide, from January to August this year, and 898 people were rounded up. Out of this, 145 cases were booked.
"We (the ministry) are constantly working on bringing down advertisements on illegal money lending, and have also liaised with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) on doing the same for online advertisements, aside from tracing syndicates which promote their services on social media," Shamsul told Parliament today.
He was responding to a question from Che Mohamad Zuklifly Jusoh (PN-Besut) who had asked about what the government was doing to address the violence committed by unlicensed money lenders, including causing damage to lenders' property. - Mkini
