PETALING JAYA: A Perikatan Nasional (PN) MP wants the Dewan Rakyat to debate the war crimes committed by Israel, noting that nations like Ireland, Spain and Colombia have done something similar.
Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal said it was crucial for Malaysia to follow suit and make its voice heard at the international stage.
“Debating Israel’s war crimes would see international media outlets publishing headlines that read ‘Malaysia Parliament strongly condemns Israel for alleged war crimes’.
“And that is what I want,” he said at a press conference at the Parliament lobby.
The Bersatu Youth chief said that the lower house had debated similar incidents in the past, citing the debate on the Mavi Marmara killings in 2010.
He added that former prime minister Najib Razak had raised the matter in the Dewan Rakyat at the time.
In the May 2010 incident, nine people were killed when Israeli commandos stormed the ship carrying humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.
Wan Fayhsal went on to claim that the government seemed “hesitant” in denouncing the war crimes committed by Israel and its prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“I hope Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim will address the war crimes by Israel and Benjamin Netanyahu,” he said, claiming that Anwar was maintaining a “50-50” position when it came to the war between Hamas and Israel.
On Oct 16, Anwar took the West to task for its hypocritical stance towards the conflict when calling for urgent action to be expedited to end Israel’s illegal occupation.
He said in every meeting with western countries, they wanted to know if Malaysia would condemn Hamas.
“I told them that Malaysia has a long-standing relationship with Hamas. As such, we cannot agree with them (the West) as Hamas won the elections and the people of Gaza chose them (to lead).”
Israel declared war on Hamas following the group’s surprise attack on several locations in Israel on Oct 7.
Following the constant bombardment of Gaza by Israel, the death toll has surpassed 5,000, with nearly half of them children. Over 15,000 have been left injured. - FMT
