Newly elected PAS Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden said he is an “open” person who has his own way of doing things, compared to his predecessor.
Afnan (above) said he has no issues supporting good government policies.
“I am an ‘open’ person... I can be friends with everyone. For example, during the parliamentary debate the other day, I supported the Jelutong MP's (RSN Rayer) argument.
“If something is right, we must support it and agree with it, even though it comes from the opposing party,” the Alor Setar MP said when met after the PAS Youth Committee election held at the Ideal Convention Centre (IDCC) in Shah Alam, yesterday.
On Wednesday, while debating the Supply Bill 2024, Rayer informed the Dewan Rakyat that he has been appointed the new chairperson of the Penang Hindu Endowment Board (PHEB), and urged Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to allocate more funds for non-Muslim houses of worship.
At this juncture, Afnan stood up to suggest that the government for endowments be tax-exempted to encourage more quarters to do the deed and help the government in the process.
Rayer welcomed Afnan’s idea, saying this was the first time he had seen “an MP from the ‘other side’ (opposition) give such a brilliant idea.”
Elaborating on his leadership style, Afnan said he would focus on readying PAS Youth to face the coming elections.
“Everyone has their own style, I want to be myself.
“I want to create multi-skilled youngsters, who are not only well-versed in Tarbiyah (Islamic knowledge) but can also talk about the country and people-related issues while fitting into any crowd,” he said.
Follow the ‘trend’
His main focus would be developing skills among youth wing members that would enable them to become a constructive opposition that can put up solutions to the problems faced by the rakyat, Afnan stressed.
He admitted that he did not expect to win the Youth chief’s position uncontested.
“I did not expect to not face a contest, usually there are at least two candidates... even (former PAS Youth chief) YB Ahmad Fadhli Shaari faced competition.”
Afnan said he was chosen by 109 out of 120 (divisions) and won without a contest after there were no other nominations. He was previously PAS Youth deputy chief.
He further said PAS Youth should be able to adapt itself to the current reality.
“I’m not saying ‘modern’, but more like adapting to the current needs and trends, without abandoning our original struggle.
“We (PAS Youth) cannot be too exclusive, we have to accommodate everyone and adapt to all situations.”
Also yesterday, Manjoi assemblyperson Hafez Sabri was elected deputy youth chief while Muhammad Hanif Jamaluddin was made vice-chief. Both won without contest.
